“I know that things are crazy right now, but you’re going to have a lot of material for my wedding speeches.”
I’m going to be completely honest here. I’ve been on some bad bachelorette parties, but thank GOD none of them went like this.
The movie follows four best friends, Jess, Blair, Alice, and Frankie (played by Scarlett Johansson, Zoe Kravitz, Jillian Bell, and Ilana Glazer respectively). Jess is marrying her dream guy, Peter, and running for office. Blair is secretly going through a divorce and a custody battle with her soon to be ex husband, and she’s a powerhouse. Alice is a teacher and struggling with her mother’s Alzheimers. Frankie is a free spirit who doesn’t really have a care in the world. The four girls haven’t been together since college, and Alice has planned a party that they will never forget.
After they arrive in Miami, Jess’ friend from her semester abroad, Pippa (Kate McKinnon), joins them. There is immediate tension between Pippa and Alice, as Alice feels like her best friend is replacing her with someone else. Frankie gets cocaine and the girls do a little bit of it, then go out for a night on the town. While drinking at a club, Blair decides they should get Jess a stripper, so Frankie orders one. When the girls arrive at home, the ‘stripper’ arrives and starts to put on a show. He makes Jess feel uncomfortable, so she gets up and Alice takes a run at him. Accidentally, she knocks him out of his chair and kills him. Mass panic breaks out among the girls and they have to figure out what to do about the situation, and fast.
I know what you’re thinking, every chick flick ever to have been made ends the same or has the same story or it’s very predictable. That’s true as a general rule, but even so we can still enjoy them. This film goes a little beyond your typical chick flick, and adds in a little of the dirty humor you see in movies such as Bridesmaids. While it is a little predictable in most parts, there are some things that you won’t expect right off the bat to happen.
The women starring in this role hit the nail right on the hammer. They embraced the characters they were supposed to play and didn’t stray one time. I love to see any movie where there is such a strong group of friends and they stick together no matter what, even through petty fights and arguments. These girls did just that. It’s realistic. No one goes through their whole life and never has a fight. My favorite performance out of the five women goes hands down to Zoe Kravitz. She played her character so well, and she went all out. Can we also talk about her haircut?! It looked so good on her.
This is a movie to go see with your girlfriends. Sneak in some cheap wine(or soda), get some popcorn, and laugh the entire time. I went with my best friend and the entire time we were hoping and praying that this would not happen to us someday. We had fun picking out which characters we related most to, and honestly just having a girls night. This movie is by no means an award winner, but it is a good laugh, a good time, and a night to get the girls together to watch. Boys, there were quite a few of you in the theater when I watched, and I heard laughter. So, let your girlfriends drag you too!
