After what felt like years, Scandal returns with our favorite leading lady, Kerry Washington. To say that it started out with a bang is a literal understatement. It was well worth the wait and I cannot wait for the rest of the season.

Starting out we see Quinn and Huck trucking it through the woods, because why not with these two, to a cabin. Within literally a minute of the show starting, the cabin blows up and we flashback to the day prior when everyone is waiting for the election results. We are with Mellie and Olivia awaiting what looks like will be a win for the duo. Waiting for the results for California, Fitz comes in to tell them that the determining county looks like it will be going to Mellie. Just as we were all getting excited and getting to relish in the fact that Mellie had FINALLY gotten something she wanted, Shonda threw us for a loop when the television reports said that Carlos Solis(Frankie Vargis, sorry) had taken California and would become the 45th president of the United States.

We see Mellie refusing to accept the truth, and Olivia accepting defeat in the hallway. Fitz confides in Olivia and tells her that Mellie is refusing to accept the truth, and that she needs to make her concede. In one of the most heartbreaking moments of the episode, we see Olivia tell Mellie that it’s over, they lost, and she must call and concede. I will say it a million times, Olivia Pope could convince me to do anything. We have to endure Mellie making the phone call, and it breaks my heart. We fought so hard for you Mellie!

Mellie and Olivia are next seen in the bathroom chugging down alcohol, because who would they be if they were bonding over a good drink in their misery? While drinking, they hear commotion outside of the room and we learn that, hold on to your socks here because this next moment blew mine right off, Frankie Vargis has been shot. WHAT!? I REPEAT FRANKIE VARGIS HAS BEEN SHOT. I’m not lying at all when I say I stood right up off of my couch and paced around the living room. I couldn’t decide whether I was happy, or sad, or mad, I was SHOOK.

This is the Scandal we all know and love, ladies and gentlemen.

As the episode progresses, we see Abby getting to be a total bad-a, the gladiators back in action, and Olivia Pope ruling the world. While watching a video of the shooting, Olivia notices that Cyrus steps away from Frankie right before the shots take place almost as if he knew it was going to happen, leading Olivia to believe that he had something to do with it. She confronts Fitz, and he tells her she has 24 hours to prove that Cyrus had something to do with it. In the meantime, we also have learned that Vargis has passed away. Fitz basically now has the ultimate power to decide the next president.

Olivia goes to the hospital to see Cyrus, hoping she can see whether or not he looks guilty while the gladiators work on trying to find any information to pin it on him. They’re having trouble finding information, and Quinn and her equally psychotic boytoy(what is his name again) are having a fight about not being able to go on vacation. Olivia sees that Cyrus is horribly upset, and she knows that he had nothing to do with it, so she tells Fitz. She doesn’t want to “fix” another presidency. So the world gets to see Fitz, once again, betray Mellie and choose Cyrus as the next president. In the meantime, the rest of the gladiators find out that a call from the tip line got deleted,  and they soon discover that it was a woman working on the Vargis campaign, oh and Quinn’s boyfriend proposed to her. But to the imporant stuff, want to know what the deleted call on the tip line was? Cyrus did it. OF COURSE HE DID! The explosion at the beginning of the episode was all in connection to the woman who left the tip, the cabin that blows up was hers, and she was inside.

Quinn and Huck bring back a bag, with her charred hand in it, and Quinn accepts the proposal. Olivia heads to the white house where Cyrus is getting his office in order and pulls him in for a hug, Olivia Pope style. She tells him she knows everything and she will do whatever it takes to bring him down. And she walks out, commanding the room, and Cyrus looks terrified, because when Olivia Pope comes for you, you better be ready to go down hard.

After an 8 month hiatus, this was the perfect episode to drag us all back in. Out of all of the TGIT premieres, this one wins. Hands down. Stay tuned for next week gladiators!
